Sylvia's Wedding

by Jimmie Chinn directed by Jeff Heys

Synopsis: It has only taken him ten years, but Gordon has finally plucked up the courage to ask his girlfriend Sylvia for her hand in marriage. As is often the case, the problems lie with the people around them. Gordon's parents, Stanley and Myrtle, think their son is marrying far beneath them, while on Sylvia's side, Vic and Joyce consider their counterparts to be unbearable snobs.
Will hostilities be suspended to allow the big day to run smoothly? Will Sheila's best friend Yvonne ever keep her comments to herself?
Our second excursion into Jimmie Chinn territory (the first one was “Straight and Narrow” in 1995) is this warm hearted and ultimately very moving comedy of family life.

Characters: 2 younger people in twenties; 4 older parents; female next door neighbour.
The ages of the characters is very general as parents have to look old enough to have a son/daughter of marriagable age.
The next door neighbour, Yvonne, is older than Sylvia but still in her thirties

Casting night: Monday September 6th at 7.30pm in the theatre

"Play Reading"

There will be no Play Reading in August. The meetings will resume on Thursday September 9th and the play will be "The Beauty Queen of Lenane" by Martin McDonagh
Synopsis: The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a macabre yet funny tale of two women who find themselves victims of their cultural isolation and existential loneliness. The play takes us to a solitary cottage in the village of Leenane, Western Ireland, where Maureen, a rather plain woman of about forty, and her seemingly senile mother Mag, live their days in a never ending battle with one another. Maureen’s selfish yearning to marry and be rid of her wretched lifestyle provokes the worst of her mother’s own egotistical and childish behavior. This dark comedy brings a realistic yet electrifying conflict to the stage and allows the audience to participate in a chilling laugh as they watch a relationship unravel and move towards a disastrous end.
